Margery Gill's Obituary - 110811

Margery Gill

MARGERY GILL Margery Louise Gill, 69 of Henderson, was born Oct. 30, 1942, in Madison, Wis., and died in an accident in Henderson Nov. 8, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Gordon and Clara (Stehr) Gill; and is survived by her three brothers, Richard (Mary), David and Donald (Carolyn); nephews, Andrew and Patrick; and niece, Stacy. Margery received her bachelor of education degree at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater in 1964 and her master of arts in education as a reading specialist at Northern Arizona University in 1977. In her 44 years of teaching, Margery worked in Greendale, Wis., and Denver, before finding her home in Nevada. She was a respected and beloved teacher for the Clark County School District for 41 years, teaching at Rowe ES, Harris ES, McDoniel ES and lastly at Vanderburg ES from 1996-2008. Margery received many awards and accolades because of her excellence in education. She was listed in the Who's Who Biographical Record of Child Development Professionals, in Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America, in Outstanding Leaders in Elementary and Secondary Educations and was named a Distinguished Elementary School Educator in the Clark County School District. Margery was actively involved at St. Viator parish in her early years in Las Vegas and then at St. Thomas More parish when she moved to Henderson. In both parishes, she served as a Catechist, a Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, member of the RCIA team, the liturgy committee and was a devoted volunteer. Margery was directly involved in social outreach to the needy, especially through the Catholic Worker's food line. In 2004, Margery joined the Viatorian Community as a lay associate member with the priests and brothers who staff both St. Viator and St. Thomas More parishes. She loved her family, her students and her many dear friends. The Wirshing family became her family here in Nevada and she adored all of the holidays and events that she spent with them. More than a thousand students, scores of parents and her many colleagues and friends loved and enjoyed Margery. We will all miss her dry sense of humor, her silly pranks, her strong principles and her chocolate chip cookies. Being anywhere with Margery was like being with a rock star because she had so many fans. She made a difference in so many lives and will be truly missed. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 19, with funeral Mass following, both at St. Thomas More Church,
130 N. Pecos Road
in Henderson. A luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Miss Gill Memorial Foundation, c/o Public Education Foundation, 3360 W. Sahara,
